How to fix the SMART Subscriptions widget not showing

Updated · SMART Subscriptions (E-TRADE PARTNER)

Check that the Subscriptions Widget app block is on the product template of your published theme, and that the product or variant is in a SMART Subscriptions plan under Plans. The widget has no on/off switch: once the block is placed and the product has a SMART plan, it shows.

SMART Subscriptions does this with plans, a product-page widget, and a native customer portal.

You created a monthly plan, opened the product page, and only the normal price and Add to cart appear. That usually means the storefront never received the app block, or the product is not part of the plan. Fix placement and assignment before you redesign colors or rewrite widget text.

Why a missing widget blocks the whole launch

  • Customers cannot choose a subscription option if purchase options never render.
  • Checkout will not create a subscription contract from a page that only sells one-time.
  • Ads that promise Subscribe and Save send traffic to a page that cannot convert.
  • Support cannot teach portal actions for subscriptions that were never purchased.
  • Home MRR and active subscriptions stay flat when the offer is invisible.

What Shopify themes require versus what SMART provides

Online Store 2.0 themes can add app blocks in the theme editor. Native Shopify does not add a subscription purchase UI to every product template. SMART provides the Subscriptions Widget block and the Plans behind it. You still must place the block on the product templates you actually publish. The widget shows only SMART's own plans; subscription options created by another app do not appear in it.

Setup and fix steps

  1. Open SMART Subscriptions and start from Home. The first setup step, Activate the subscription widget on your theme, opens the theme editor on the product template.
  2. In Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes → Customize on the published theme (not only a draft you never publish).
  3. Open a product template, add the Subscriptions Widget app block near the buy buttons, and save.
  4. In the app, open Plans and confirm the product or variant is in a plan. A saved plan is live; a discount is optional.
  5. Open that product in the theme editor. If the block shows a notice that the product has no subscription plan yet, assign it in Plans.
  6. There is no on/off switch in Widget. Use it for colors, spacing, typography, text, and the Show sale badge and Show price before discount toggles once the widget appears.
  7. Hard-refresh the live product URL, or open it in an incognito window, using the same product you assigned.
  8. If the widget shows, continue the Home path: customize widget, activate the subscription page in Management, then set up Emails.
  9. Place a test order with a subscription option selected and confirm the contract under Subscriptions.

Common mistake: adding the block to a draft theme

The theme editor can look perfect on an unpublished theme while customers still see the live theme without the Subscriptions Widget. Always confirm the block is on the published product template, then retest the public product URL.

Worked example: widget missing after a theme update

A skincare store switched to a new OS2 theme. Plans still existed in SMART, but product pages went back to one-time only. MRR on Home stopped growing because new customers never saw Subscribe and Save.

  1. Customize the newly published theme.
  2. Add Subscriptions Widget to the default product template and to any alternate product templates used by subscription SKUs.
  3. Save and view a live assigned product URL in incognito.
  4. Confirm Plans still assign those products (theme changes do not remove assignments, but always verify).
  5. Re-check the Widget Behaviour settings (select subscription by default, hide one-time purchase) if the new layout made labels unclear. They apply to every product with a SMART plan.
  6. Complete a test subscription checkout and confirm customers can still reach their subscription page.

Once the block is visible again, refine presentation with customize the subscription widget. If you intentionally sell subscription-only SKUs, also review hide one-time purchase.

Practical tips when the widget still will not appear

  • Test the direct product page, not only a featured section, quick view, or app-powered modal that may not load app blocks.
  • If you use multiple product templates, add the Subscriptions Widget to every template that subscription products use.
  • After fixing visibility, activate the subscription page in Management and the Emails you need. A visible widget without portal or billing emails is only half a launch.
  • For a clean first-time path, follow how to set up product subscriptions.
  • If Checkout works but renewals worry you next, read subscription payment gateways.

How to confirm the fix is complete

The fix is complete when a published, assigned product shows the Subscriptions Widget to a logged-out visitor, Checkout accepts a subscription option, and a new contract appears under Subscriptions. After that, treat appearance bugs as theme or assignment regressions, not as a reason to rebuild every plan from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

›Why is my Shopify subscription widget not showing?

Most often the Subscriptions Widget app block is missing from the published product template, you are previewing the wrong theme, or the product is not in a plan under Plans.

›Do I need code to show the SMART subscription widget?

No for standard Online Store 2.0 themes. Add the Subscriptions Widget theme app block in the theme editor and save.

›The widget shows in the editor but not on the live site. Why?

You are likely editing an unpublished theme, or a different product template than the live product uses. Publish the theme that contains the block and retest the public URL.

›Can plan assignment hide the widget on one product only?

Yes. Products or variants that are not in a SMART plan show no widget, even when the block is present. In the theme editor you see a notice that customers never see.

›Is there a setting that turns the widget off?

No. The Widget page has styling, text, and behaviour settings but no on/off switch. To hide the widget, remove the block from the template.

›What should I do after the widget appears again?

Customize the Widget, activate the subscription page in Management, activate Emails, and place a test subscription order. Then watch Home for active subscriptions and MRR.
