How to hide one-time purchase for subscription-only products

Updated · SMART Subscriptions (E-TRADE PARTNER)

Assign the product to a plan in SMART Subscriptions, then check Only sell this product as a subscription in the product’s Purchase options in Shopify admin; the Subscriptions Widget then hides one-time on that product. To hide one-time on every product with a SMART plan, turn on Hide one-time purchase option in Widget instead; that changes the product page only and does not make checkout require a plan.

SMART Subscriptions does this with plans, a product-page widget, and a native customer portal.

Some offers only work as a refill. A continuity coffee club, a monthly lens solution, or a members-only replenishment box should not present Add to cart as a one-time escape hatch. Hiding one-time purchase keeps the product page honest: the only path forward is the subscription.

Why subscription-only presentation matters

  • It prevents customers from buying a continuity SKU once and never returning.
  • It keeps inventory and forecasting aligned with recurring demand.
  • It reduces support confusion when marketing says subscription but the page still shows one-time.
  • It makes plan discounts and cadences the only purchase story on that product.
  • It pairs cleanly with portal actions so customers adjust timing later instead of buying oddly one time.

What Shopify can and cannot do natively

Shopify has a native switch: Only sell this product as a subscription in the product’s Purchase options section (Shopify Help). Products set this way can only be sold on the Online Store channel. You still need an app to create the selling plans and a product-page widget to show them clearly.

Setup steps to hide one-time purchase

  1. Install SMART Subscriptions and open Home.
  2. Use the Setup Guide to add the Subscriptions Widget to the product template. Save the theme.
  3. Create or open the plan in Plans. Set delivery frequency, Pay as you go or Pay in advance, and any Percentage, Amount off, or fixed price discount. Assign the products or variants that must be subscription-only.
  4. For one product: open it in Shopify admin and check Only sell this product as a subscription in Purchase options. The widget then shows only subscription options for that product.
  5. For every product with a SMART plan: open Widget and turn on Hide one-time purchase option. It hides the one-time choice and pre-selects the first subscription option, but checkout does not require a plan, so add-to-cart paths outside the product page can still sell it once.
  6. Customize colors, spacing, and text so the remaining options clearly state cadence and price.
  7. Activate the portal under Management so customers can pause, resume, skip/unskip, cancel, switch saved payment methods, and edit delivery details after purchase.
  8. Activate the Emails you need, then test the live product page in an incognito window and place a test order.

Common mistake: using the Widget toggle for one product

Hide one-time purchase option applies to every product with a SMART plan, and it only changes the product page. If only some products should be subscription-only, leave it off and use Shopify’s Only sell this product as a subscription on those products. Products without a SMART plan are never affected; they keep the normal add to cart.

Worked example: subscription-only meal kit addon

A meal kit brand sells a weekly snack addon that should never be a one-time line item. Delivery every 1 week, Pay as you go, 5% off versus the old one-time price they are retiring. Their other products keep one-time purchase.

  1. In Plans, create an option with Delivery every 1 week, Pay as you go, Percentage 5%. Assign only the snack addon product.
  2. Confirm the Subscriptions Widget is on that product’s template.
  3. In Shopify admin, open the snack addon and check Only sell this product as a subscription. Leave the Widget toggle off so other products keep one-time.
  4. If the plan has two weekly options (for example different discount tiers), put the one you want pre-selected first in Plans.
  5. Activate the portal under Management so households can pause or skip during travel weeks.
  6. Activate create and billing Emails.
  7. Test: the product page shows only subscription choices, checkout creates a contract, and the customer can skip from their account.

If the widget does not appear, fix placement first with subscription widget not showing. For styling the remaining options, see customize the subscription widget.

Practical tips for subscription-only products

  • Update on-page copy so marketing matches the widget. Do not promise one-time checkout anywhere on a subscription-only URL.
  • Use the Widget toggle only if every product with a SMART plan is subscription-only. Mixed catalogs should use Shopify’s per-product setting instead.
  • Customers still can’t swap products, plans, or quantities in the portal. They can pause, skip, resume, cancel, switch saved payment methods, and edit delivery details.
  • After theme switches, re-check that the Subscriptions Widget still exists on the published product template.
  • For the full first-time setup order, follow how to set up product subscriptions.

When to hide one-time versus keep both options

Hide one-time purchase when the SKU is built for continuity and a single purchase breaks the offer economics or operations. Keep both options when Subscribe and Save is an upgrade path beside a healthy one-time business. Shopify’s per-product setting and the Widget toggle support either model. The mistake is mixing the story: ads say subscription-only while the page still sells one-time.

Frequently asked questions

›Can I make a Shopify product subscription-only?

Yes. Assign it in SMART Plans, then check Only sell this product as a subscription in the product’s Purchase options in Shopify admin. The Subscriptions Widget hides one-time automatically. Test the live product page afterward.

›What does Hide one-time purchase option in Widget do?

It hides the one-time choice on every product with a SMART plan and pre-selects the first subscription option. It changes the product page only; checkout does not require a plan.

›Can I still offer more than one subscription cadence?

Yes. Customers choose among the subscription options in the plan. The first option is pre-selected; reorder options in Plans to change it.

›Does hiding one-time purchase affect products without a plan?

No. Products without a SMART plan keep the normal add to cart.

›Can customers buy one-time later from the portal?

No. The portal is for managing the subscription: pause, resume, skip/unskip, cancel, saved payment method, and delivery details. It is not a one-time storefront.

›What should I test after hiding one-time purchase?

Confirm the published product page shows only subscription options, a test order creates a contract under Subscriptions, and portal actions work for the test customer.
