Payment gateways for SMART Subscriptions on Shopify
Updated · SMART Subscriptions (E-TRADE PARTNER)
Shopify subscriptions need a gateway Shopify supports for subscriptions: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, or Stripe (select merchants only). SMART Subscriptions creates the plans and starts each renewal charge, and Shopify charges the saved payment method through that gateway. Shopify Payments is the most common choice.
SMART Subscriptions does this with plans, a product-page widget, and a native customer portal.

A merchant can build a perfect monthly plan, publish the widget, and still hit a wall on the second cycle if the store's payment setup is not one Shopify supports for subscriptions. Gateway eligibility is a launch requirement, not a polish step after ads start running.
Why gateway support matters for subscriptions
- Renewals charge a saved payment method without the customer returning to Checkout.
- Shopify says local, manual, and non-card payment methods might not be available for subscriptions.
- Failed renewals follow the retry rules in Settings. By default that is 3 retries, 7 days apart, then pause.
- Support volume spikes when customers think they are subscribed but renewals never charge.
- Testing the gateway before marketing the offer protects both MRR on Home and customer trust.
What Shopify handles versus what SMART does
Shopify owns Checkout, selling plans, subscription contracts, and stored customer payment methods. SMART Subscriptions manages plans, the widget, the customer portal, retry settings, and emails. It also starts each renewal charge: the app checks for due orders every 15 minutes, so renewals are charged within about an hour of their due time. Shopify then charges the saved method and creates the order. SMART does not process payments and cannot make an unsupported gateway work.
| Topic | What to verify | Where it shows up |
|---|---|---|
| First subscription checkout | Customer can pay with a method that supports subscriptions | Shopify Checkout |
| Saved payment method | The contract has a payment method on file | Contract page in Subscriptions |
| Renewal charge | Second cycle bills without a new checkout | New Shopify order (pay as you go) and the contract in Subscriptions |
| Failed card | Retries and final action are set | Settings → Payment method failure |
| Customer card change | Customer can switch to another saved method | Subscription page in customer accounts (Management) |
| Optional checkout cleanup | Hide methods that should not appear for subscriptions | Plans → Hide payment methods on checkout (is / contains) |
Gateways Shopify supports for subscription apps
From Shopify's considerations and payment gateways page. Availability also depends on your region and the gateway's terms.
| Gateway | Wallets for subscriptions |
|---|---|
| Shopify Payments | Shop Pay, Apple Pay (Visa and Mastercard only), Google Pay, PayPal |
| PayPal Express | PayPal |
| Authorize.net | PayPal only; no Apple Pay or Google Pay |
| Adyen | Supported; Shopify lists no wallet details |
| Stripe | Select merchants only |
Setup steps before you sell subscriptions
- Confirm your store uses one of the gateways above. Local, manual, and non-card methods might not be available for subscriptions.
- Install SMART Subscriptions and follow the Home setup guide: activate the Subscriptions Widget, create a plan in Plans, customize the Widget, activate the subscription page in Management, and set up Emails.
- If some payment methods should not appear when a subscription is in the cart, set Hide payment methods on checkout on the subscription option in Plans (name is or contains). It hides them for the whole checkout, one-time items included.
- Open Settings and review Payment method failure: retry attempts (0-10, default 3), days between them (1-14, default 7), and the final action: cancel, pause (default), or skip the order. Errors that cannot succeed on retry go straight to the final action.
- Activate Billing successful and Billing failed under Emails. All 17 templates start inactive.
- Place a test subscription with Shopify Payments in test mode and confirm the contract under Subscriptions. Then wait for a renewal on a short test option, such as Delivery every 1 day. The app has no button to charge a renewal now.
- Have the test customer switch to another saved payment method from the subscription page once, so you know that path works.
Common mistake: launching on a one-time-only mental model
A successful first Checkout is not proof that renewals will charge. Confirm your gateway is on Shopify's subscription list, then watch one real renewal (or a failure and retry) before you spend on Subscribe and Save traffic.
Worked example: Shopify Payments launch checklist
A US store on Shopify Payments wants monthly Pay as you go protein pouches. Before ads, the team validates the money path end to end.
- Practice in a development store with Shopify Payments in test mode. Shopify's test (Bogus) gateway does not work with subscription products.
- Create a short test option in Plans (Delivery every 1 day, Pay as you go), assign the product, and add the Subscriptions Widget.
- Check out as a test customer with a Shopify Payments test card.
- Open Subscriptions and confirm the contract and payment method are present.
- If the customer has a second saved card, switch to it once from the subscription page.
- In Settings, note the retry rules and set the final action to pause.
- Wait for the next day's renewal. Confirm a new Shopify order, or a Billing failed email and a scheduled retry.
- Then build the real monthly option, publish the offer on the live theme, and watch Home for active subscriptions and MRR.
If you also need to remove methods from subscription checkout, continue with hide checkout payment methods for subscriptions.
Practical tips for payment readiness
- If you are unsure about your gateway, contact support by chat or email before launch.
- Do not rely on cash on delivery or methods that cannot be charged later for auto-renewing plans.
- Pair gateway checks with failed payment dunning so retries are intentional.
- Keep billing failure emails active under Emails before you scale paid traffic.
- Remember: SMART Home metrics are MRR and active subscriptions. Gateway health still shows up in failed renewals and support tickets.
Build subscriptions on a gateway that can renew
Plans, the product-page widget, a native customer portal, and payment recovery in one Shopify app.
Install free on ShopifyHow to decide if you are ready to charge renewals
You are ready when a test customer can complete Checkout with a subscription option, the contract shows a saved payment method, one renewal (or retry) behaves as set in Settings, and the customer can switch payment methods on the subscription page. Until those checks pass, treat the product page offer as incomplete even if the widget looks finished.
Frequently asked questions
›Which payment gateway should I use for Shopify subscriptions?
One Shopify supports for subscriptions: Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Authorize.net, Adyen, or Stripe (select merchants only). Shopify Payments is the most common choice.
›Can Shop Pay work with subscriptions?
Yes, with Shopify Payments. Shopify lists Shop Pay, Apple Pay (Visa and Mastercard only), Google Pay, and PayPal for subscriptions on Shopify Payments. Authorize.net does not support Apple Pay or Google Pay.
›What happens when a renewal payment fails?
SMART retries it using the rules in Settings, then runs the final action you chose: cancel, pause, or skip the order. Activate the Billing failed emails under Emails so customers know to switch to another saved payment method.
›Can I hide some payment methods on subscription checkout?
Yes. In Plans, use Hide payment methods on checkout with is or contains matching. It applies to the whole checkout when the cart has that subscription option. See the dedicated hide-payment-methods guide for examples.
›Does SMART Subscriptions process payments itself?
No. Shopify charges the customer's saved payment method through your gateway. SMART starts each renewal charge on schedule and manages plans, contracts, portal actions, retries, and emails.
