How to set up SMART Subscriptions email notifications
Updated · SMART Subscriptions (E-TRADE PARTNER)
SMART Subscriptions has 17 editable email templates under Emails for lifecycle, billing, retry, inventory, and skip events. Every template starts inactive, so nothing sends until you activate it. Edit the subject and Liquid body, preview it, send a test email, then activate the events your store needs.
SMART Subscriptions does this with plans, a product-page widget, and a native customer portal.

A subscriber pauses for travel and never gets confirmation. Another has a failed card and only notices when the next box never ships. Subscription email is how the contract stays understandable after checkout. The goal is not more mail; it is the right event copy, activated on purpose.
Why subscription emails matter
- Lifecycle messages confirm create, pause, resume, cancel, expire, and failed contract states.
- Billing messages explain successful charges and failed renewals.
- Retry and final-retry templates support dunning so customers know to fix their payment method.
- Inventory templates explain stock delays without sounding like a payment failure.
- Skip and unskip templates match portal self-service so support is not the only confirmation channel.
Which templates exist
SMART ships 17 templates in five families: lifecycle, billing, retry, inventory, and skip. The app sends them itself; they are not Shopify notifications. All start inactive until you activate each one you want live.
| Family | Templates in Emails | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| Lifecycle | Subscription created, paused, resumed, cancelled, expired, failed | Confirm contract state changes |
| Billing | Billing successful, Billing failed | Explain charges and the first decline |
| Retry | Billing retry successful, Billing retry failed, Final billing retry failed | Support payment dunning |
| Inventory | Inventory failed, Inventory retry successful, Inventory retry failed, Final inventory retry failed | Explain stock recovery attempts |
| Skip | Billing cycle skipped, Billing cycle unskipped | Confirm portal or admin skips |
Setup steps in SMART Subscriptions
- Install SMART Subscriptions and open Emails.
- Set the Sender name and Reply to address so customer replies reach your team.
- Scan the template list. Each row shows Active or Inactive. Every template starts inactive.
- Open a template you need (start with Subscription created, Billing successful, and Billing failed).
- Edit the subject and Liquid body. Use Variables so shop name, contract details, and money formats stay accurate. Use Date translations for day and month names.
- Preview the rendered email, then use Send test email to check it in a real inbox.
- Activate the template when the copy is correct. Customers receive it only after activation.
- Repeat for pause, resume, cancel, skip, retry, and inventory templates that match your Settings dunning and portal policies.
- Place a test subscription and trigger safe events (create, pause, skip) to confirm the activated messages arrive. Use how to test Shopify subscriptions.
Common mistake: assuming templates send by default
Every template is inactive until activated. If customers are not receiving subscription mail, open Emails and check the Active/Inactive badge before rewriting copy.
Worked example: lean launch email set
A pet-food brand wants clarity without flooding inboxes on day one. The portal is active, payment dunning uses the default Pause after retries, and inventory retries use the default Skip.
- Activate Subscription created, Billing successful, and Billing failed first.
- Activate Subscription paused, Subscription resumed, Billing cycle skipped, and Billing cycle unskipped so portal and admin actions are confirmed.
- Activate Billing retry failed and Final billing retry failed to support payment recovery; keep wording aligned with Pause as the final action in Settings.
- Activate Inventory failed and Final inventory retry failed if stockouts are realistic for the catalog.
- Leave less critical templates inactive until support asks for them.
- After a test order, confirm create and billing messages, then pause and skip from the portal and confirm those emails too.
You can expand later. Activation is per template, so you do not have to turn everything on at once.
Practical tips for subscription email ops
- Match final-retry copy to the real Settings final action (cancel, pause, or skip). Mismatched wording creates tickets.
- SMART templates cover subscription events only. Renewals are normal Shopify orders, so review your Shopify order notifications separately.
- When you change portal policy, update pause/skip/cancel emails in the same release. See pause, skip, and cancel.
- Keep brand voice consistent with Widget purchase-option text so the post-purchase story matches the product page.
- If you are still finishing setup, follow how to set up product subscriptions before polishing every template.

Start lean, then activate more templates when a real gap appears: expired contracts, inventory retries, or unskip confirmations. The Emails page is built for that gradual approach. Pair messaging with clear customer portal actions so email and self-service tell the same story.
Frequently asked questions
›Are subscription email templates on by default?
No. All 17 templates under Emails are inactive until you activate them. You can edit first, then activate when ready.
›Can I edit the email content?
Yes. Each template has an editable subject and Liquid body, a variables reference, a live preview, a test email, and date translations for day and month names.
›Who sends these emails?
SMART sends them, not Shopify notifications. Set the sender name and reply-to address under Emails.
›Which emails should I activate first?
Most stores start with Subscription created, Billing successful, and Billing failed, then add pause, skip, and retry templates that match portal and Settings behavior.
›Do these emails replace Shopify order emails?
No. SMART templates cover subscription lifecycle, billing, retry, inventory, and skip events. Renewals create normal Shopify orders; check your Shopify notification settings separately for order emails.
›Where do I align retry email copy?
With payment and inventory failure rules in Settings. See failed payments and dunning.
