How to pause, skip, or cancel Shopify subscriptions
Updated · SMART Subscriptions (E-TRADE PARTNER)
Customers using SMART Subscriptions can pause, resume, skip, or cancel from the subscription page in the new Shopify customer accounts. They can also switch to another saved payment method and edit the address or delivery method. Cancel stays blocked until the plan's minimum number of payments is reached, and customers cannot change plan, frequency, quantity, or products.
SMART Subscriptions does this with plans, a product-page widget, and a native customer portal.

Support inboxes fill up when subscribers only have one lever: cancel. Most people need something smaller: skip one delivery, pause for a month, switch the card, or change a shipping address. Those actions belong in the customer portal.
This guide covers the self-serve actions customers get today. For the wider portal picture, see Shopify subscription customer portal.
Why pause and skip matter as much as cancel
- Skip keeps the subscription active when someone only needs to miss one order.
- Pause is better when the break is longer than a single cycle.
- Cancel is the right tool when the customer is done, not when they are traveling for two weeks.
- Switching to another saved card and fixing the address prevent avoidable failed renewals and failed deliveries.
What Shopify can and cannot do natively
Shopify subscription contracts support lifecycle states, and the new customer accounts provide the signed-in surface. The app adds the subscription page customers use day to day. SMART Subscriptions gives customers pause, resume, skip and unskip, cancel, a switch to another saved payment method, and shipping address, pickup, or local delivery edits. The portal has no plan, frequency, quantity, or product changes, and a cancelled subscription cannot be reactivated there.
| Customer goal | Best action | Available in portal? |
|---|---|---|
| Miss one upcoming order | Skip the next order, or any upcoming order | Yes |
| Bring back a skipped order | Unskip | Yes |
| Stop for a while, keep the contract | Pause, then resume | Yes |
| End the subscription | Cancel | Yes, once the plan's minimum payments are reached |
| Card expired or failed | Switch to another saved payment method | Yes, if the customer has another saved method |
| Moved house | Edit shipping address, pickup, or local delivery | Yes |
| Switch plan or frequency | Not self-serve | No |
| Swap products or change quantity | Not self-serve (you can edit it in Subscriptions) | No |
Setup steps in SMART Subscriptions
- Create a plan in Plans and add the Subscriptions Widget to your product template with SMART Subscriptions.
- Turn on the new Shopify customer accounts. In Management, activate the Subscription management page. All portal actions come with it; they cannot be switched on or off one by one.
- Optional: activate the Thank you page card (placed in the checkout editor) and the Order action button, so customers can reach the page from checkout and from their orders.
- Create a test customer, place a subscription order, and sign in to that account.
- Skip the next order and confirm the upcoming order date moved. Then unskip it from the upcoming orders list.
- Pause and resume the same contract.
- If the test customer has a second saved card, switch to it once. Edit the address once too, so support knows the path.
- Test cancel last, on a disposable test contract. If the plan has a minimum number of payments, cancel stays blocked until that many are made.
Do not promise plan changes in help-center copy
Customers cannot change plan, frequency, quantity, or products in the portal. If storefront FAQ or chat macros say they can, rewrite those answers. Point people to pause, skip, cancel, payment method, and address instead. You can still change products, quantity, price, and frequency for them in Subscriptions: see manage subscription contracts.
What pause and cancel do
- Pause has no end date. There are no charges or orders until the customer, or you, resume it.
- Cancel is immediate. Billing and deliveries stop, and the customer cannot undo it or reactivate the subscription from the portal.
- If a subscription option sets a minimum number of payments, the portal blocks cancel until it is reached. The first order counts as payment 1. The customer sees the minimum and how many payments are made.
- You can still cancel any contract in Subscriptions, one at a time or in bulk.
Worked example: pause for one month, then resume
A monthly pet-food subscriber will be away for about a month and does not want the next charge or shipment.
- Customer signs into the store account and opens the pet-food subscription.
- Chooses pause (not cancel).
- Confirms the subscription shows as paused. No charges or orders happen while it is paused.
- After returning, chooses resume. The dialog shows when billing restarts.
- Confirms the subscription is active again and checks the next order date.
The customer kept the relationship without a full cancel-and-rebuy loop, and support did not need to edit the contract by hand.
Practical tips
- Teach skip vs pause in your FAQ with one sentence each so customers pick correctly.
- When a renewal fails, ask the customer to switch to another saved payment method, and review failed payments / dunning.
- Activate the Subscription paused, Subscription resumed, Subscription cancelled, and Billing cycle skipped / unskipped emails if you want customers notified: subscription email notifications.
- The portal text is available in 33 languages.
- Remind the team that portal self-serve does not include plan change, product swap, or quantity change.
- After cancel tests, confirm no further renewals create orders in where subscription orders appear.
- Before launch, run the full path in how to test Shopify subscriptions.

›Can customers pause a Shopify subscription?
Yes. In SMART Subscriptions they pause from the subscription page in their customer account and resume any time. A pause has no end date.
›What is the difference between skip and pause?
Skip misses one upcoming order and keeps the subscription on its normal path afterward. Customers can also unskip it. Pause stops all charges and orders until the customer resumes.
›Can customers cancel themselves?
Yes, from the portal. If the plan sets a minimum number of payments, cancel is blocked until that many are made. Cancel is immediate and cannot be undone.
›Can customers change their plan when they pause or skip?
No. The portal has no plan, frequency, quantity, or product changes. You can make those edits for the customer in Subscriptions.
›Can customers update payment method or address?
Customers can switch to another payment method already saved in their account. The portal has no form for adding a new card. They can also edit the shipping address, pickup location, or local delivery details.
