How to offer Subscribe and Save on Shopify
Updated · SMART Subscriptions (E-TRADE PARTNER)
Create a plan in SMART Subscriptions Plans with a discount (Percentage, Amount off, or a fixed price), show it with the Subscriptions Widget, and let customers pause, skip, resume, or cancel from their customer account. You can also switch to a second discount after X payments.
SMART Subscriptions does this with plans, a product-page widget, and a native customer portal.

A pantry brand might sell olive oil as $28 one-time or $24 when customers choose Deliver every 6 weeks. The saving is the merchandising hook. The subscription contract is what keeps the refill happening. If the product page does not make both the price and the cadence obvious, Subscribe and Save becomes noise instead of a reason to commit.
Why Subscribe and Save offers matter
- They raise average order predictability when customers lock in a refill cadence.
- A visible discount gives a concrete reason to choose recurring over one-time.
- Shared plans keep the same saving story across many products or variants.
- Portal actions protect retention when someone needs to skip a month instead of cancelling forever.
- Clear pricing reduces checkout hesitation and later "I thought I paid full price" tickets.
What Shopify can and cannot do natively
Shopify can represent Subscribe and Save through selling plans and pricing policies, but native admin is not a complete merchant Subscribe and Save builder. You still need an app to create the plan, attach products, present the choice on the product page, and handle portal and email lifecycle around the discount offer.
| Subscribe & Save need | Native Shopify alone | SMART Subscriptions |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring delivery cadence | Selling plan APIs | Plans: every 1-99 days, weeks, months, or years |
| Discount style | Pricing policies via apps | Percentage, Amount off, or Fixed amount (a fixed price) |
| Second discount after X payments | Possible via app policies | Change discount value after X payment cycles in Plans |
| Show one-time vs subscribe | Theme must surface options | Subscriptions Widget with sale badge, price before discount, and optional default selection |
| Customer skip or pause | Needs app portal | Management subscription page: pause, resume, skip/unskip, cancel |
| Cap how long billing runs | App-configured | Maximum payments in Plans; the contract expires after the last one |
| Minimum commitment | App-configured | Minimum payments in Plans; portal cancel is blocked until reached |
Setup steps for a Subscribe and Save offer
- Install SMART Subscriptions and open Home.
- Activate the Subscriptions Widget on your product template in the theme editor.
- Create a plan in Plans and add a subscription option. Set Delivery every (for example 4 weeks or 1 month) and a Label customers will read, such as “Deliver every 4 weeks, save 10%”.
- Choose Pay as you go for classic Subscribe and Save (charge per delivery), or Pay in advance if a prepaid model fits better.
- Set the discount: Percentage, Amount off, or Fixed amount (a fixed price). Optionally change it after X payments, and set a minimum or maximum number of payments. The first order counts as payment 1.
- Assign the products or variants that should show the offer, in the app or from Shopify admin (Manage subscription plan on the product, or Add to subscription plan in the product list).
- Customize the Widget so the saving and cadence are obvious. The sale badge and price before discount come from the plan. Hide one-time purchase applies to every SMART product; for one subscription-only product, use Shopify's “Only sell this product as a subscription” instead.
- Activate the subscription page in Management so customers can pause, skip, resume, or cancel without emailing support.
- Activate relevant Emails (Subscription created, Billing successful, Billing failed at minimum).
- Test a one-time cart and a Subscribe and Save cart on the same product before promoting the offer.
Common mistake: hiding the saving in a vague label
The widget shows a SAVE badge, the price before discount, and a subscription info tooltip, all from the plan. The option name is the Label you type in Plans. If it only says Subscribe, many shoppers stick to one-time. Put the frequency and the saving in the Label.
Worked example: 15% off every month, then 10% after 3 payments
A shampoo brand wants a strong acquisition discount that settles into a smaller ongoing saving. First three payments at 15% off, then 10% off ongoing, monthly Pay as you go.
- In Plans, add an option: Delivery every 1 month, Pay as you go.
- Set a 15% Percentage discount. Turn on Change discount value after X payment cycles, enter 3, and set the new discount to 10%. Payments 1-3 get 15% off; payment 4 onward gets 10%.
- Assign shampoo variants that should share the offer.
- In Widget, keep one-time purchase on. Set the option Label to mention monthly delivery and the intro saving. The widget's info tooltip also shows the discount change.
- Activate the subscription page in Management so customers can skip or pause when they still have product left.
- Activate Emails for create and billing events, place a test subscription, and confirm the contract under Subscriptions.
For deeper discount patterns, continue with Shopify subscription discounts. For cadence choices, see billing frequencies.
Practical tips for Subscribe and Save merchandising
- Match frequency to real consumption. Overly fast cadences create skips and cancellations.
- Use Percentage when catalog prices change often. Use Amount off when the saving must stay in currency, or Fixed amount when the promise is one subscription price for every product in the plan.
- Do not promise portal product swaps. Customers can pause, resume, skip/unskip, cancel, switch to another saved payment method, and edit the address, but not swap products, plans, or quantities.
- Watch Home for active subscriptions and MRR after launch, not only first-order conversion.
- If a product should never sell one-time, use hide one-time purchase.
Launch a clear Subscribe and Save offer on Shopify
Plans, the product-page widget, a native customer portal, and payment recovery in one Shopify app.
Install free on ShopifyWhen Subscribe and Save is the right offer
Use Subscribe and Save when the product is naturally refillable and the discount still leaves healthy margin after shipping and payment fees. Keep the option Label honest about cadence and price. Pair the offer with the Management subscription page so a temporary skip does not become a permanent cancel.
Frequently asked questions
›What discount types can I use for Subscribe and Save?
In SMART Plans, discounts can be Percentage, Amount off, or Fixed amount (a fixed price). You can also switch to a second discount after X payments and set a minimum or maximum number of payments.
›Is Subscribe and Save the same as pay in advance?
Not necessarily. Classic Subscribe and Save is usually Pay as you go (charge per delivery) with a saving. Pay in advance is a different billing style you can also configure in Plans.
›Can I keep one-time purchase next to Subscribe and Save?
Yes. One-time purchase shows by default. The Widget setting Hide one-time purchase applies to every product with a SMART plan. For a single product, use Shopify's “Only sell this product as a subscription”.
›Can customers change their Subscribe and Save discount themselves?
No. Discount terms live on the plan. Customers manage pause, resume, skip/unskip, cancel, payment method, and address on the subscription page in their customer account.
›Where do I see if Subscribe and Save is converting?
Check new contracts under Subscriptions and watch MRR plus active subscriptions on Home.
